Twelve intractable wounds had been treated with topical pure phenytoin powder since October, 1989. The result was excellent. The cases treated induded chronic ulceration of low extremity, post irradiation ulcers and residual wounds from burn. The surface area of ulcers varied from 3×3cm to 10×13cm, a mean of 6×7cm; the residual wound from burn from 1% to 9%, a mean of 5%. The traditional therapy or skin graft both failed to give any healing of the wounds. The duration of the wound existed from 1 month to 20 years. After topical phenytion, 8 cases intractable lesions healed completely and 4 with the combination of skin graft. The mean time for wound healing was 29.37 days. The method,
results and the mechanism of enhanccment of healing of intractable lesions from topical phenytion discussed.
