Thirty-five SD rats were divided into 3 groups, in which 5 rats were served as control. The other 2 groups, 15 rats in each received either NGF solution or normal saline. The injury at the level of T8 spinal segment of the rat in these two groups were made by dropping a weight of 10 g from a height 2.5 cm after a total laminectomly from T7-11 segments. A thin plastic tube was inserted into the subarachnoid space below the injured segments. NGF was introduced through the tube at intervals of 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 hours in the NGF group, and normal saline in the normal saline group. At 4, 8, 24 hours following surgery, 5 rats in each group were sacrificed and the injured segments were resected for examination. The contents of water and calcium were measured by dry-wet method and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The result showed that total calcium and water contents in normal saline group were markly increased, however, the changes of these two parametere were not so prominent in NGF group. It was suggested that NGF play a role in protecting the spinal cord by maintaining the calcium level of the injured segment.
Abstract In case of sciatic nerve injury, there is degeneration of neuron in the corresponding segment of spinal cord. To study whether NGF could protect the dorsal root ganglia in this situation, the following experiments were performed: 72 SD mice were divided into 2 groups. In each mouse, the sciatic nerve was sectioned at the middle of the right thigh, and then,the proximal end of the sciatic nerve was inserted into a one ended silastic tube. The NGF 0.15ml (contain 2.5S NGF 0.15mg) was injected into the tubes of the experimental group, while a equal amount of normal saline was injected into the tubes of the control group. After 1, 3, 5, 9, 20 and 30 days, 6 mice of each groupwere sacrificed respectively, and 5th to 6th lumbar segments of the spinal cords were resected for examination. By histochemical study, the activity of fluoride resistant acid phosphatase (FRAP) of each animal was detected. The results showed: (1) Excision of the sciatic nerve led to decrease of FRAP activity, it suggested that the injury of sciatic nerve could damage the dorsal root ganglia; (2) The use of exogenous NGF could protect the FRAP activity. It was concluded that NGF played an important role in protecting the dorsal root ganglia in peripheral nerve injury, in vivo.
Objective To evaluate the reliability and the advantageof canal laminoplasty with laminoplasty over laminectomy for treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis.Methods From June 2000 to September 2004, the titanium miniplate fixation technique was applied to re-implantation of the vertebral lamina in the lumbar spine. The vertebral lamina was made with a specially made osteotome and a special technique in 18 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. Results The patients were followed up for 1 yr and 8 mon on average (range, 3 mon4 yr and 3 mon) and were observed to have a bony fusion of the re-implanted lamina 3-9 months postoperatively. There was no nonunion, displacement of the re-implanted lamina, overgrowth of the anterior bone edge of osteotomy, recompression of the nerves or instability of the lumbar spine. Conclusion The result demonstrates that canal laminoplasty with the titanium miniplate re-implantation of the vertebral lamina in lumbar spine can restore the normal anatomy, keep stability of the spine, and avoid adhesion and scar in the canal.
Objective To investigate the clinical effect of reconstructed bone xenograft plus buttress plate (T or L type) fixation in treating tibial plateau fracture. Methods From June 2001 to March 2003, 32 cases of tibial plateau fractures were treated by means of open reduction,reconstructed bone xenograft plus buttress plate (T or L type) fixation. There were 23 cases of bumper fracture, 5 cases of falling injury and 4 cases of crush injury by a weight; 20 males and 12 females, aged from 18 to 69 years with an average of 38 years. All patients had close fracture. Results All the patients were followed upfor 9 months to 23 months, tibial plateau fracture healed satisfactorily without sunken articular surface. According to Pasmussen criterion, the results were excellent in 16 knees, good in 12knees and moderate in 3 knees. The satisfactory rate was 87.5%. Conclusion Reconstructed bone xenograft plus buttress plate internal fixation has good effect in treating tibial plateau fractures because it can avoid the complication of transplantation of ilium.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of nerve root compression on dorsal root ganglia. METHODS: Following the method of Kawakami, 4/0 ribbon gut were applied around left L4-6 spinal nerve roots in 50 SD rats. Just 3 mm cranial to the dorsal root ganglia, the nerve roots were secured by two ligation node. The nerve roots of right side were as control. The L4-6 spinal cord was taken out 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks after surgery, respectively. The activity of fluoride resistant acid phosphatase (FRAP) was determined by the enzyme histochemistry (Gomori method) and the image analysis technique. RESULTS: In the test side, the FRAP content of spinal dorsal horn reduced 4 weeks after operation. And there were gradually more and more decreases from 4 to 12 weeks. There was significant difference between the test side and control side (P lt; 0.01). CONCLUSION: Chronic nerve root compression causes damage to dorsal root ganglia.
