  • Significance of axial length in branch retinal vein occlusion

Purpose To evaluate the significance of axial length in case of branch retinal vein occlusion(BRVO). Methods A case-control study of axial length was performed using 34 patients with BRVO and 34 age and sex-matched control patients selected from a list of subjects who had undergone cataract extraction.Axial length measurement were taken with an A-scan ultrasonography. Results The affected and fellow eye in patinets of BRVO group did not differ statistically in axial length (P>0.20).The mean axial length of affected eyes in BRVO group was (23.16plusmn;0.82)mm, and the mean axial length of control eyes was(23.78plusmn;1.06)mm.The difference in axial length between the eyes with BRVO and the eyes in the control group was not statistically significant(P>0.10). Conclusion Hyperopia as measured by axial length is not a risk factor to BRVO. (Chin J Ocul Fundus Dis,1998,14:12-13)

  • Evaluation of Anterior Segment Parameters of Hyperopia of School-aged Children Using Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of anterior segment optical coherence tomography to assess the anterior segment morphology of hyperopia in school-aged children. 320 eyes of 160 school-aged children, 6-12 years of age, were examined with anterior segment optical coherence tomography and were divided into four groups according to the cycloplegic spherical equivalence of refractive error. The mentioned four groups were: emmetropia group, low hyperopia group, moderate hyperopia group and high hyperopia group. The measurements of central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, angle opening distance, trabecular iris space area and scleral angle were compared in pairs among objects in the four groups. The results showed that high hyperopia and moderate hyperopia had shallower anterior chamber depth and narrower anterior chamber angle compared to those in emmetropia group. The study also showed that anterior segment optical coherence tomography as a non-contact technology could become a new technology for accessing the anterior segment morphology of hyperopia in school-aged children.

  • Preliminary study on changes and mechanism of choroidal thickness in silicone oil-filled eyes

ObjectiveTo investigate the potential effect of hyperopia status on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in silicone oil (SO)-filled eyes.MethodsThis self-comparative study was conducted in Department of Ophthalmology, Central Theater Command General Hospital. The 50 patients (100 eyes) were collected with unilateral macula-on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment from January 2019 to July 2019, who successfully underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and SO tamponade. Retinal reattachment was observed after surgery in all patients. One month after PPV, the affected eye was wore soft, contact lenses for 24 hours to correct refractive error (RE), depending on its optometry value. The SFCT of the affected eyes was measured using OCT before and after lenses wear. The fellow eyes also received OCT examination at the same time. T test was used to compare SFCT between SO-filled eyes and fellow eyes.ResultsThe mean RE of the SO-filled eyes was +6.38±1.12 D. The mean SFCT of SO-filled eyes (247.12±17.63 μm) was significantly thinner than that of the fellow eyes (276.32.55±17.63 μm) (P<0.001). The SFCT of the SO-filled eyes was significantly thinner than fellow eyes, and the difference was statistically significant (t=-3.95, P<0.001). After lenses wear, the mean SFCT of the SO-filled eyes increased to 276.32±24.86 μm. Compared with before lenses wear, the difference was statistically significant (t=-4.30, P<0.001). Compared with the fellow eye, the difference was not statistically significant (t=0.05, P>0.05).ConclusionSFCT reduction in the SO-filled eyes may be due to the hyperopia status caused by SO, which can be reserved by RE correction.
