  • Research advances of primary colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma

Objective To summarize the current research advances of colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC). Methods In this paper, the related literatures of colorectal SRCC in recent years were collected and reviewed. Results Colorectal SRCC was a pathological subtype of colorectal adenocarcinoma, with extremely low incidence but high malignancy and poor prognosis. At present, its molecular mechanism was still not very clear and the clinicopathological manifestations were not specific. Surgical treatment was the major treatmen. Conclusions Although we already have a certain degree of understanding about colorectal SRCC, due to the limitations in the results of some related researches because of the small sample size or the single-center study, we still need more researches to improve the cognition of colorectal SRCC.

  • Application of hydrogel materials in renal tissue engineering

Acute kidney injury is a worldwide public health issue, and its treatment and management strategies continue to advance. In addition to traditional kidney replacement therapy, research in recent years has been focused on whole organ engineering and biofabrication of kidney assistive devices and bioinjections for in-body regeneration. Hydrogel materials show great potential in renal tissue engineering because of their good biocompatibility, thermal stability and controllable biochemical and mechanical properties. This article reviews the application of various hydrogel materials in renal tissue engineering to promote kidney regeneration and discusses the characteristics and applications of natural hydrogels and synthetic hydrogels, which is expected to further promote their clinical applications.

  • Multivariate Regression Analysis of Postoperative Complications for Colon Cancer

ObjectiveTo explore the risk factors influenced postoperative complications of colon cancer. MethodsIn this study, 114 patients diagnosed definitely as colon cancer were enrolled from January 2009 to April 2010 in this hospital. The patients were divided into the complication group and non-complication group according to the occurrence of postoperative complications during hospital day. Furthermore, clinicopathological features and operative parameters of patients were compared in two groups, and independent factors for postoperative complications were identified by multiple regression analysis. ResultsThere were statistical differences between two groups in operation time (t=2.034, P=0.032), diabetes mellitus (χ2=5.920, P=0.015), differentiation degree of tumor (χ2=7.163, P=0.028), hospital stay (χ2=0.411, P=0.026), and ASA grades (χ2=11.585, P=0.009). The morbidity of patients with operative time gt;200 min was significant higher than that ≤100 min (χ2=8.884, P=0.003) and 100-200 min (χ2=7.318, P=0.007). The morbidity of patients with ASA Ⅳ grade was higher than that with ASA Ⅰ grade (χ2=13.426, P=0.000). For tumor differentiation, the morbidity of patients with well-differentiated tumor was higher than that with moderately differentiated tumor (χ2=4.950, P=0.026) and poorly differentiated tumor (χ2=7.476, P=0.006). The hospital stay (P=0.009), age (P=0.024), diabetes mellitus (P=0.018), and ASA grade (P=0.001) were the independent factors for postoperative complications by multivariate regression analysis. ConclusionThe physical quality indexes are the mostly common risk factors of postoperative complications for colon cancer, emphasizing on the high-risk factors and making a targeted and individual treatment plan for each patient are of great important to improve the prognosis.

  • Randomized Controlled Trial of Combining Multi-Slice Spiral Computed Tomography with Inflammatory Biomarkers on Rectal Cancer Surgical Decision Making

Objective To determine the influence and significance of combinative assessment of 64 multi-slice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) with serum amyloid A protein (SAA) or C-reactive protein (CRP) on the selection of operative procedures of rectal cancer under the multi-disciplinary team. Methods Prospectively enrolled patients diagnosed definitely as rectal cancer at West China Hospital of Sichuan University from February to August 2009 were randomly assigned into two groups. In one group named MSCT+SAA group, both 64 MSCT and SAA combinative assessment were made for the preoperative evaluation. In another group named MSCT+CRP group, both MSCT and CRP combinative assessment were made for preoperative evaluation. Furthermore, the preoperative staging and predicted operation procedures were compared with postoperative pathologic staging and practical operation procedures, respectively, and the relationship between the choice of operation procedures and clinicopathologic factors was analyzed. Results All 165 patients were randomly assigned into MSCT+SAA group (n=83) and MSCT+CRP group (n=82). The baseline characteristics of two groups were statistically similar (Pgt;0.05). For MSCT+SAA group, the accuracies of preoperative staging T, N, M and TNM were 74.7%, 68.7%, 100% and 66.3%, respectively. For MSCT+CRP group, the accuracies of preoperative staging T, N, M and TNM were 72.0%, 86.6%, 100% and 81.7%, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in the accuracies of N staging and TNM staging between two groups (P<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference of the accuracy of prediction to operative procedures between two groups (90.4% vs. 95.1%, Pgt;0.05). The pathological T staging (P<0.001), N staging (P<0.001), TNM staging (P<0.001), preoperative serum level of SAA (P=0.010), serum level of CRP (P=0.042), and distance of tumor to the dentate line (P=0.011) were associated with the operative procedures. Conclusion Combinative assessment of MSCT+CRP could improve the accuracy of preoperative staging and operative procedures prediction, which may be superior to MSCT+SAA.
