  • EFFECT OF ARTHROSCOPIC ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of reconstructing anterior cruciate ligament by using a bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft under arthroscopy. METHODS: Among 13 patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury, there were 9 males and 4 females(aged 23-45). Their anterior cruciate were reconstructed by applying the mid-one third autologous bone-patellar tendon-bone strip in -press fit technique under arthroscopy. The result was positive in 13 cases in anterior drawer test, in 4 cases in pivot shift test and in 7 cases in Lachman’s test preoperatively. RESULTS: The follow-up period was 5-25 months averaged 15 months. The results of the above tests were negative in all the patients. According to Boszotta’s evaluation quota, the results were excellent in 9 cases, good in 3 cases and fair in 1 case. The knee stability improved obviously in all patients. CONCLUSION: Anterior cruciate ligament injury can be treated by arthroscopic reconstruction with autologous bone-patellar tendon-bone strip and the clinical result of short-term followup is satisfactory.

  • The variation of four amino acids release of the retina in acute ocular hypertension in rabbits

Objective To monitor the release of amino acids of the whole retina during and after experimental glaucoma by increasing the intraocular pressure (IOP). Methods Experimental glaucoma was induced in one of the two eyes of rabbits by increasing IOP at 120 mm Hg for 45 min under infusion of saline in anterior chamber;then the pressure was released and the needle inserted into the anterior chamber was removed, this state was maintained for another 45 min.Every 15 min during the experiment 5 rabbits were killed and experimental eyes were enucleated.Aliquots(20 μl)of the retinal extracts(see below)were mixed with ophthaldialdehyde reagent and analysed for amino acid content by the HPLC method of Wangwei,using a 150 mm×4.6 mm,5 μm C18 column. Results A large increase in the release of glutamate, but not of the other three amino acids monitored, occurred during initial experimental ocular hypertension. It reached peak value of(111.73±17.46)10-5 mmol/g at 15 min of hypertension.15 min after release of intraocular pressure, again, immediately large and specific increase in the concentration of glutamate was reached to(102.96±51.91)10-5 mmol/g.In eyes subjected to paracentesis of anterior chamber,no difference was found between experimental eyes and controls. Conclusion These results suggest that glutamate is triggered by increasing the IOP,and it releases not only during the period of experimental ocular hypertension, but also afterwards. • The effects of astaxanthin on the airway inflammation and remodeling in the asthmatic rats

Objective To observe the effects of astaxanthin (AST) on the airway inflammation and remodeling in the asthmatic rats. Methods Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=10 for each group): saline-sensitized and-saline-challenged group (the control group), bronchial asthma group (the asthma group), bronchial asthma+astaxanthin 5 mg/kg gavage treatment group (the AST 5 mg/kg group), bronchial asthma+10 mg/kg gavage treatment group (the AST 10 mg/kg group), and bronchial asthma+50 mg/kg gavage treatment group (the AST 50 mg/kg group). The level of interleukin-5(IL-5), interleukin-13(IL-13), interferon-γ(IFN-γ), tansforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the total IgE level in the serum were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).The infiltration of airway inflammatory cells and the degree of airway epithelial cells detachment, the extent of goblet cell hyperplasia and the severity of subepithelial collagen deposition were evaluated on the hematoxylin eosin (HE), periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and Masson trichrome stained lung sections. reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to measure the expression of mucin 5A and C (MUC5AC) messenger ribonucleic acid(mRNA) in lung tissue; Immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of MUC5AC protein in the rat airway epithelium. Results The level of IL-5, IL-13, TGF-β, MDA and the total IgE in the serum respectively [(36.73±2.29), (53.99±2.70), (60.89±2.54)ng/mL,(18.65±0.76)umol/L, (54.50±2.91)ng/mL], the extent of inflammatory cells infiltration (46.24 ± 4.26), the extent of eosinophils infiltration (2.09± 0.13), the extent of epithelial cells detachment [(6.09±0.45)%], the extent of goblet cell hyperplasia [(13.65±1.90)%], the extent of subepithelial collagen deposition [(17.58±2.14)%], the MUC5AC mRNA expression level, and the lung tissue MUC5AC protein expression IOD value (187±12) in the asthma group were all higher than those in the control group (P<0.01 or P<0.001), the level of IFN-γ and SOD in the BALF[(26.38±1.70) ng/mL], [(16.37±1.22) U/L], was lower than that in the control group (P<0.001); The level of IL-5, IL-13, total IgE, TGF-β, MDA, the inflammatory cells infiltration in the airway epithelial, the degree of epithelial cell damage and detachment, the degree of goblet cell hyperplasia, the degree of subepithelial collagen deposition, the MUC5AC mRNA expression in lung tissue, and the MUC5AC protein expression in airway epithelial cells in the AST treated groups were all lower than those in the asthma group (P<0.05 or P<0.01 or P<0.001),the level of IFN-γ, SOD in the BALF was higher than that in the asthma group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Conclusion Astaxanthin can inhibit airway inflammation, downregulate airway MUC5AC expression, inhibit goblet cell proliferation, and alleviate airway remodeling in rats with bronchial asthma.

  • Clinically nutritional assessment methods for liver cancer patients and their development

Objective To summarize the nutritional assessment methods for liver cancer patients and their development, and to provide reference for rationally nutritional assessment and nutritional support. Method Domestic and foreign literatures were searched to summarize the nutritional assessment methods for liver cancer patients and their development, in order to determine a practical and feasible assessment method. Results The evaluation validity of traditionally nutritional assessment methods which contained many individual indicators was low. But subjective global assessment (SGA), mini nutritional assessment (MNA), and nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS-2002) had similar evaluation validity, this 3 kinds of nutritional assessment methods were more suitable for liver cancer patients compared with the traditionally nutritional assessment methods. Conclusion The clinician should simultaneously apply SGA, MNA, NRS-2002, and other comprehensively nutritional assessment methods, as well as related anthropometric and laboratory indexes, to get a more accurate assessment of the nutritional status for patients with liver cancer.
