ObjectiveTo explore a standardized model for cardiothoracic surgery resident training program based on a combined clinical and research oriented team approach. Methods We conducted this study in a nationally ranked Class AAA hospital among the eleven residents who were accepted into the program. Throughout their training periods, clinical surgical skills were taught by one-on-one mentoring by individually assigned doctoral degree advisors, other attending surgeons and doctoral degree candidates in the program. To foster their scientific curiosity and research skills, regular didactic lectures in basic science and statistical skills by the doctoral thesis advisors, supplemented by monthly journal clubs during which trainees were required to present and discuss a previously assigned topics based on recent clinical cases within the department, thus combining acquisition of clinical skills and theory/research at the same setting. ResultsEleven physicians were selected for this training path. With respect to clinical surgical skills, 4 residents were judged to be sufficient at the end of the first cycle. The other seven residents at the end of the second cycle. One trainee won the third prize in the Medical Skill Competition in the hospital. As for scientific research skills, the team produced 11 scientific articles, one of which was accepted by the annual national conference in cardiothoracic surgery and the first author was invited to present the article. The team submitted four research projects, one won funding at the provincial competition and three within the medical school. ConclusionOur proposed standardized model of cardiothoracic surgery resident training based on a combined clinical and research oriented approach appears to be practical with moderate success. Adaptation of this model by other cardiothoracic surgery training programs in the nation will further attest to its value and functionality.

The most frequently-encountered problem were research design, experimental techniques and methods, the contact with laboratory, and statistical analysis. When encountering the problems, 51.1% postgraduates turned to tutors, and 40.1% dealt with it by themselves. ConclusionIt is suggested that, cultivating scientific research ability and awareness of medical postgraduates should be strengthened, and platforms should be set up for medical postgraduates to carry out research.
High quality clinical trial depends on the preliminary research design and optimizing, the quality control in the medium term, the source data verification and statistics in later stages. Steering committee (SC) can meet above requirements. According to the characteristics of the research project, we invited international experts whose professional background are obstetrics and gynecology, statistics and methodology to set up SC. SC will hold regular conference, the content of the conference included project progress and quality control, research assistant training and assessment, conducting knowledge lectures and so on. The establishment of SC ensured the protocol maneuverability, answered PCOS related problems from different professional perspectives, and solved the problems such as how to improve the scientific research output. At the same time, it provides a platform of scientific research practice and self-improvement. It has profound influence on standardizing the management of the clinical trial, strengthening the consciousness of team work, promoting multi-disciplinary team cooperation, expanding scientific research thinking and cultivating clinical research talent.
The operation mode of scientific research incentive mechanism in West China Hospital of Sichuan University is closely connecting individual needs with organizational objectives, and coordinating and adjusting again through communication and feedback. It can play an incentive role continuously and actively promotes the development of hospital scientific research. But the incentive mode, research funding management, research output rate, strengthening of effective communication and other aspects need to be constantly optimized and improved. Based on Porter Lawler’s comprehensive incentive theory, this paper explores and summarizes the operation mode of scientific research incentive mechanism in West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Finally, the paper puts forward suggestions, which aims to provide reference for the construction of scientific research incentive mechanism in large general hospitals.
The interrupted time series analysis was used to evaluate the incentive effect of the management methods of the SCI thesis fund for scientific research in West China Hospital of Sichuan University. We found an increase in number of the SCI papers and the growth rate after the adoption of scientific research incentive measures, indicating that the management methods of the SCI thesis fund had the incentive effect of scientific research. The interrupted time series analysis could be used in the incentive analysis of scientific research.
