ObjectiveTo summarize the influence and mechanism of visceral fat on the treatment and prognosis of gastric cancer patients.MethodLiteratures on the correlation and mechanism between visceral fat and treatment and prognosis of gastric cancer were collected and reviewed.ResultsHigh visceral fat may promote the incidence and progress of gastric cancer, and increase the incidence of complication of radical gastrectomy, including surgical site infection, pancreatic fistula, etc., as well as prolong the length of hospital stay. Reducing patients’ visceral fat level before operation could reduce the incidence of surgical complication. However, the persistent decrease of visceral fat level after operation may indicate poor prognosis. The effect of visceral fat on gastric cancer and its treatment was mainly due to the local chronic inflammation caused by excessive visceral fat tissue, the change of adipocytokine secretion, insulin resistance, and other mechanisms.ConclusionWe need to use visceral fat and other indicators to evaluate gastric cancer patients’ weight and body composition, in order to better guide the treatment and prognosis evaluation of gastric cancer.
Objective To formulate an evidence-based treatment plan for a patient with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Methods Based on an adequate assessment of the patient’s condition and using the principle of PICO, we searched The Cochrane Library (Issue 1, 2007), PubMed (1996 to February 2007) and EMbase (1974 to February 2007) to identify the best available clinical evidence. Results Five randomized controlled trials, 4 systematic reviews and 1 health economic evaluation were included. According to the current evidence, as well as the patient’s clinical condition and preference, 5 cycles of raltitrexed plus cisplatin were given to the patient along with thoracic drainage and other symptomatic treatment. And the follow-up after 4 months indicated that this treatment plan was appropriate for the patient. Conclusion Evidence-based approaches helped us to prepare the most appropriate chemotherapy plan for this patient and will help improve the therapeutic results for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Objective To investigate the association between the -6843G/A polymorphism of highaffinity IgE receptor βchain ( FcεRIβ) gene and asthma susceptibility in Chinese population. Methods We searched Pubmed, EMBASE, CNKI ( Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) , Wanfang Datebase, VIP Database up to October 1,2009. Statistical analysis was performed with the software program RevMan 4. 2. 8 and STATA 10. 0. Results A total of 9 case-control studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results indicated that the G allele carriers had a 49% increased risk of asthma in Chinese population ( GG + GA vs. AA: OR=1. 49, 95% CI 1. 01-2. 22) . In the subgroup analysis, the results indicated that the polymorphism was associated with increased risk of asthma in the adults ( GG + GA vs. AA: OR = 1. 83, 95% CI 1. 32- 2. 52) , but not in children ( GG + GA vs. AA: OR = 1. 19, 95% CI 0. 68-2. 08) . Conclusion The -6843G/A polymorphism of FcεRIβ gene is associated with increased asthma susceptibility in Chinese population.
