  • Particle Swarm Optimization Fuzzy Modeling and Closed-loop Anaesthesia Control Based on Cerebral State Index

Due to individual differences of the depth of anaesthesia (DOA) controlled objects, the drawbacks of monitoring index, the traditional PID controller of anesthesia depth could not meet the demands of nonlinear control. However, the adjustments of the rules of DOA fuzzy control often rely on personal experience and, therefore, it could not achieve the satisfactory control effects. The present research established a fuzzy closed-loop control system which takes the cerebral state index (CSI) value as a feedback controlled variable, and it also adopts the particle swarm optimization (PSO) to optimize the fuzzy control rule and membership functions between the change of CSI and propofol infusion rate. The system sets the CSI targets at 40 and 30 through the system simulation, and it also adds some Gaussian noise to imitate clinical disturbance. Experimental results indicated that this system could reach the set CSI point accurately, rapidly and stably, with no obvious perturbation in the presence of noise. The fuzzy controller based on CSI which has been optimized by PSO has better stability and robustness in the DOA closed loop control system.

  • Optimal Solution and Analysis of Muscular Force during Standing Balance

The present study was aimed at the optimal solution of the main muscular force distribution in the lower extremity during standing balance of human. The movement musculoskeletal system of lower extremity was simplified to a physical model with 3 joints and 9 muscles. Then on the basis of this model, an optimum mathematical model was built up to solve the problem of redundant muscle forces. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to calculate the single objective and multi-objective problem respectively. The numerical results indicated that the multi-objective optimization could be more reasonable to obtain the distribution and variation of the 9 muscular forces. Finally, the coordination of each muscle group during maintaining standing balance under the passive movement was qualitatively analyzed using the simulation results obtained.

  • Application of an Adaptive Inertia Weight Particle Swarm Algorithm in the Magnetic Resonance Bias Field Correction

An adaptive inertia weight particle swarm algorithm is proposed in this study to solve the local optimal problem with the method of traditional particle swarm optimization in the process of estimating magnetic resonance (MR) image bias field. An indicator measuring the degree of premature convergence was designed for the defect of traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm. The inertia weight was adjusted adaptively based on this indicator to ensure particle swarm to be optimized globally and to avoid it from falling into local optimum. The Legendre polynomial was used to fit bias field, the polynomial parameters were optimized globally, and finally the bias field was estimated and corrected. Compared to those with the improved entropy minimum algorithm, the entropy of corrected image was smaller and the estimated bias field was more accurate in this study. Then the corrected image was segmented and the segmentation accuracy obtained in this research was 10% higher than that with improved entropy minimum algorithm. This algorithm can be applied to the correction of MR image bias field.

  • Optimization of the parameters of microcirculatory structural adaptation model based on improved quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization algorithm

The vessels in the microcirculation keep adjusting their structure to meet the functional requirements of the different tissues. A previously developed theoretical model can reproduce the process of vascular structural adaptation to help the study of the microcirculatory physiology. However, until now, such model lacks the appropriate methods for its parameter settings with subsequent limitation of further applications. This study proposed an improved quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm for setting the parameter values in this model. The optimization was performed on a real mesenteric microvascular network of rat. The results showed that the improved QPSO was superior to the standard particle swarm optimization, the standard QPSO and the previously reported Downhill algorithm. We conclude that the improved QPSO leads to a better agreement between mathematical simulation and animal experiment, rendering the model more reliable in future physiological studies.

  • Feature fusion of electrocardiogram and surface electromyography for estimating the fatigue states during lower limb rehabilitation

In the process of lower limb rehabilitation training, fatigue estimation is of great significance to improve the accuracy of intention recognition and avoid secondary injury. However, most of the existing methods only consider surface electromyography (sEMG) features but ignore electrocardiogram (ECG) features when performing in fatigue estimation, which leads to the low and unstable recognition efficiency. Aiming at this problem, a method that uses the fusion features of ECG and sEMG signal to estimate the fatigue during lower limb rehabilitation was proposed, and an improved particle swarm optimization-support vector machine classifier (improved PSO-SVM) was proposed and used to identify the fusion feature vector. Finally, the accurate recognition of the three states of relax, transition and fatigue was achieved, and the recognition rates were 98.5%, 93.5%, and 95.5%, respectively. Comparative experiments showed that the average recognition rate of this method was 4.50% higher than that of sEMG features alone, and 13.66% higher than that of the combined features of ECG and sEMG without feature fusion. It is proved that the feature fusion of ECG and sEMG signals in the process of lower limb rehabilitation training can be used for recognizing fatigue more accurately.

  • Analysis of the risk factors and screening model establishment of type 2 diabetes mellitus based on the particle swarm optimization BP neural network

Objective To analyze the risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus and establish BP neural network model for screening of type 2 diabetes mellitus based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Methods Inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Department of Endocrinology of the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University between July 2021 and August 2022 were selected as the case group and healthy people in the Health Management Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University as the control group. Basic information and physical and laboratory examination indicators were collected for comparative analysis. PSO-BP neural network model, BP neural network model and logistic regression models were established using MATLAB R2021b software and the optimal screening model of type 2 diabetes mellitus was selected. Based on the optimal model, the mean impact value algorithm was used to screen the risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results A total of 1 053 patients were included in the case group and 914 healthy peoples in the control group. Except for type of salt, family history of comorbidities, body mass index, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and staple food intake (P>0.05), the other indexes showed significant differences between the two groups. The performance of the PSO-BP neural network model outperformed the BP neural network model and the logistic regression model. Based on PSO-BP neural network model, the mean impact value algorithm showed that the risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus were fasting blood glucose , heart rate, age , waist-arm ratio and marital status , and the protective factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus were high density lipoprotein cholestero, vegetable intake, residence, education level, fruit intake and meat intake. Conclusions There are many influencing factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Focus should be placed on high-risk groups and regular disease screening should be carried out to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The screening model of PSO-BP neural network performs the best, and it can be extended to the early screening and diagnosis of other diseases in the future.
