  • Design of a Front-end Device of Heart Rate Variability Analysis System Based on Photoplethysmography

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the difference between the successive changes in the heartbeat cycle, and it is produced in the autonomic nervous system modulation of the sinus node of the heart. The HRV is a valuable indicator in predicting the sudden cardiac death and arrhythmic events. Traditional analysis of HRV is based on a multi-electrocardiogram (ECG), but the ECG signal acquisition is complex, so we have designed an HRV analysis system based on photoplethysmography (PPG). PPG signal is collected by a microcontroller from human’s finger, and it is sent to the terminal via USB-Serial module. The terminal software not only collects the data and plot waveforms, but also stores the data for future HRV analysis. The system is small in size, low in power consumption, and easy for operation. It is suitable for daily care no matter whether it is used at home or in a hospital.

  • Comparison and applicability study of blood volume pulse extraction based on facial video

Blind source separation technique based on independent component analysis (ICA) can separate blood volume pulse (BVP) from the facial video and then realize the telemetry of heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and other vital signs parameters. However, the superiority of ICA in BVP extraction has not been demonstrated in the existing researches. Some researchers suggested using traditional G-channel method for BVP extraction (G-BVP) instead of ICA method (ICA-BVP). This study investigated the applicability of ICA-BVP comparatively. To solve the inherent permutation problem of ICA, a spectral kurtosis-based method was proposed for BVP identification. The experimental results based on the facial video datasets from 9 subjects shows that ICA-BVP method has apparent advantages in motion artifacts attenuation and ambient light changes elimination. The kurtosis-based method achieved a good performance in BVP identification and dynamic heart rate (HR) estimation. In practical application, the proposed ICA-BVP method could present a better stability and accuracy in vital signs parameters extraction.

  • Pulse transit time detection based on waveform time domain feature and dynamic difference threshold

Aiming at the defects that the traditional pulse transit time (PTT) detection methods are sensitive to changes in photoplethysmography (PPG) signal and require heavy computation, we proposed a new algorithm to detect PTT based on waveform time domain feature and dynamic difference threshold. We calculated the PTT by using dynamic difference threshold method to detect the R-waves of electrocardiogram (ECG), shortening the main peak detection range in PPG signal according to the characteristics of the waveform time domain, and using R wave to detect the main peak of PPG signal. We used the American MIMIC database and laboratory test data to validate the algorithm. The experimental results showed that the proposed method could accurately extract the feature points and detect PTT, and the PTT detection accuracies of the measurements and the database samples were 99.1% and 97.5%, respectively. So the proposed method could be better than the traditional methods.

  • Study on aided diagnosis for cardiovascular diseases based on Relief algorithm

The study was intended to introduce a novel method for aided diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases based on photoplethysmography (PPG). For this purpose, 40 volunteers were recruited in this study, of whom the physiological and pathological information was collected, including blood pressure and simultaneous PPG data on fingertips, by using a sphygmomanometer and a smart fingertip sensor. According to the PPG signal and its first and second derivatives, 52 features were defined and acquired. The Relief feature selection algorithm was performed to calculate the contribution of each feature to cardiovascular diseases. And then 10 core features which had the greatest contribution were selected as an optimal feature subset. Finally, the efficiency of the Relief feature selection algorithm was demonstrated by the results of k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and support vector machine (SVM) classifier applications of the features. The prediction accuracy of kNN model and SVM reached 66.67% and 83.33% respectively, indicating that: ① Age was the foremost feature for aided diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases; ② The optimal feature subset provided an important evaluation of cardiovascular health status. The obtained results showed that the application of the Relief feature selection algorithm provided high accuracy in aided diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.
