  • The influence of disaster preparedness education on college students’ awareness, actions and abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness

ObjectiveTo analyze the impact of disaster prevention and preparedness education courses on college students’ awareness, actions and abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness, so as to provide a reference for the establishment and optimization of disaster education-related courses in colleges.MethodsStudents who took the optional course “Disaster Preparedness Education” of Sichuan University in the fall semester of 2019 to 2020 were included. Questionnaires were issued before and after the course to compare the differences in awareness, actions and abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness of college students before and after the course. We also analyzed the differences between college students of different genders and college students of different grades.ResultsFinally, 148 college students were included. After the course, college students’ awareness scores (9.24±0.61 vs. 6.11±0.52), action scores (6.89±0.70 vs. 2.65±0.58) and ability scores (33.73±1.61 vs. 18.55±1.88) of disaster prevention and preparedness were improved compared to those before the course, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Before the course, boys’ disaster prevention and preparedness awareness score was higher than that of girls (6.48±0.56 vs. 5.23±0.44), the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05); there was no significant difference in the scores of actions or abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness between boys and girls (P>0.05). After the course, there was no statistically significant difference in any of the scores between boys and girls (P>0.05). Before and after the course, there was no statistically significant difference in any of the scores between the senior college students and the lower college students (P>0.05). College students’ overall satisfaction with disaster preparedness education was relatively high, with the highest scores for teaching methods and assessment methods.ConclusionDisaster preparedness education courses have a positive effect on improving the comprehensive qualities of college students’ disaster preparedness awareness, actions, and abilities, but it is necessary to attract more college students to participate and increase the scope of the course.

  • Analysis and model prediction of the burden of digestive diseases attributed to smoking in China from 1990 to 2019

ObjectiveTo analyze the burden of digestive diseases attributed to smoking in China from 1990 to 2019 and forecast its change in the next 10 years. MethodsThe Global Burden of Disease database 2019 was used to analyze the burden of digestive diseases attributed to smoking in China from 1990 to 2019. Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the time variation trend. A time series model was used to predict the burden of digestive diseases attributable to smoking over the next 10 years. ResultsIn 2019, there were 12 900 deaths from digestive diseases attributed to smoking in China, with a DALY of 398 600 years, a crude death rate of 0.91/100 000 and a crude DALY rate of 28.02/100 000. The attributed standardized mortality rate was 0.69 per 100 000, and the standardized DALY rate was 19.79 per 100 000, which was higher than the global level. In 2019, the standardized mortality rate and DALY rate of males were higher than those of females (1.48/ 100 000 vs. 0.11/ 100 000, 38.42/ 100 000 vs. 293/100 000), and the standardized rates of males and females showed a downward trend over time. In 2019, both mortality and DALY rates from digestive diseases attributed to smoking increased with age. ARIMA predicts that over the next 10 years, the burden of disease in the digestive system caused by smoking will decrease significantly. ConclusionFrom 1990 to 2019, the burden of digestive diseases attributed to smoking showed a decreasing trend in China, and the problem of disease burden is more serious in men and the elderly population. A series of effective measures should be taken to reduce the smoking rate in key groups. The burden of digestive diseases caused by smoking will be significantly reduced in the next 10 years.

  • Recombined adenovirus mediated delivery of p21 inhibits oxygen-induced retinal neovascularization in mice

Objective To observe the the inhibitory effect of recombined adenovirus mediated delivery of p21 (rAd-p21) on oxygen-induced retinal neovascularization in mice. Methods A total of 56 C57BL/6 mice at the age of seven days were divided into control group, phosphate buffer solution (PBS) group, rAd-p21 group and rAdno purpose gene control (rAd-NC) group, 14 mice in each group. The retinal neovascularization of PBS, rAd-p21and rAd-NC group were induced by oxygen, and received an intravitreal injection 1 mu;l PBS, rAd-p21 and rAd-NC at postnatal day 11, respectively. The rats of control group were not intervened. At postnatal day 17,RNV was determined by retinal flat mounts and retinal section; non-perfusion areas of retina were analyzed by Image-Pro plus 6.0 software; reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot was used to measure the mRNA and protein expression of p21 and CDK2. Results Compared with PBS and rAdNC groups, the retinal nonperfusion areas, neovascularization and the numbers of endothelial cell nuclei breaking through the internal limiting membrane in rAd-p21 group were reduced significantly. Nonperfusion areas of retina in rAd-p21 group was less than that in PBS and rAd-NC groups, the difference among these three groups was significantly (F=101.634,P<0.05). Compared with the other three groups, the level of p21 mRNA and protein in rAd-p21 group increased significantly (F=839.664, 509.817;P<0.05); the level of CDK2 mRNA and protein in rAd-p21 group decreased significantly (F=301.858, 592.882;P<0.05). Conclusion rAd-p21can inhibit oxygen-induced retinal neovascularization, up-regulated p21 expression and down-regulated CDK2 expression may be the mechanism.

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Past, Present and Future: An Overview

cardiac rehabilitation has evolved over the past decades from a simple monitoring for the safe return to physical activities to a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on patient education, individually tailored exercise training, modification of the risk factors and the overall well-being of the cardiac patients. It has been proven to be an effective tool for the care of the patients with heart disease. Recent research in cardiac rehabilitation has demonstrated that tremendous benefits can be derived from the optimal use of cardiac rehabilitation in patients with various cardiac pathologies including ischemic heart disease, heart failure and post heart surgery. The benefits of cardiac rehabilitation include mortality reduction, symptom relief, reduction in smoking and improved exercise tolerance, risk factors modification and the overall psychosocial wellbeing. Unfortunately, cardiac rehabilitation remains considerably underutilized mainly because of referral problems and poor enrollment. The development of alternate approaches and the use of transtelephonic and other means of monitoring and surveillance will help expand the utilization of cardiac rehabilitation.
